Río Dulce

The ascent of the Dulce River passes through mangroves, cayucos and tropical forest. The excursion begins at the Livingston dock (by prior arrangement with one of the boatmen) and travels the 16 kilometers to the so-called Golfete, a widening that ventures the volume of the famous Lake Izabal, upstream.

On the way, a stop is made at Aguas Calientes , a hot spring that pours sulfurous water into the river, and at the famous Isla de los Pajaros, actually two islands inhabited by thousands of aquatic birds.

Chocón Machacas Biotope

This protected reserve is part of the Rio Dulce National Park and is one of the last habitats of the endangered Caribbean manatee, an aquatic mammal reminiscent of the walrus. The Chocón Machacas biotope is located on the northern shore of the Golfete and can be visited thanks to a network of aquatic routes (boat routes through several lagoons) that facilitate the observation of the flora and fauna of the place.
