It was in 1984 that was made official by the Ministry of Education, marking October 24, as the Day of the National Anthem of Guatemala. This date was intended to honor the birthday of the author of the music of the National Anthem, the musician Rafael Álvarez Ovalle, who was born in San Juan Comalapa, Chimaltenango.

Since that year, events are held throughout the country to pay tribute to the history of its creation, and instill in the new generations the importance of valuing this patriotic song that is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.

History of the national anthem

The national anthem of Guatemala was created in 1897 by the composer Rafael Álvarez Ovalle and the Cuban poet José Joaquín Palma. But it was modified in 1934 by the Guatemalan poet José María Bonilla Ruano, following the orders of General Jorge Ubico.

  • The national anthem of Guatemala celebrated its 125th anniversary of having been sung for the first time with the current lyrics and music. This historic event took place in the now disappeared Colon Theater.
