Where the river hides under the rocks

Semuc Champey, “where the river hides under the stones”, in the Mayan language q’ek’chi, is one of the most spectacular places in Guatemala.

In the middle of a lush tropical forest flows the Cahabón River and in the vicinity of Lanquín an incredible natural phenomenon occurs. The Cahabón river has a strong flow, but suddenly it enters a cavity in the limestone rock, appearing 300 meters below.

On the surface, small staggered pools remain, fed by water from different streams. The depth of these pools ranges between 1 and 3 meters. The peculiarity of these pools is their turquoise color, which to some extent reminds us of Urederra.

How to get to Semuc Champey

Access to Semuc Champey is not easy. It is located in the municipality of Lanquín, belonging to the state of Alto Veracruz, in the heart of Guatemala.

It is a very attractive destination for the traveler who comes to Guatemala, so it combines its route from Antigua, Altitán or Coban to continue to Tikal or Rio Dulce and to the Garifuna area.

We were coming from Nebaj to Lanquín. The route runs through winding terrain with many curves and all the time going up and down passes. It is a long day of connection with almost 200 kilometers, although in Guatemala journeys are not measured in kilometers but in hours. The trip took more than 8 hours, including the lunch stop. Leaving from Antigua the trip usually takes more than 10 hours.

Touring Semuc Champey

A pick-up was waiting for us first thing in the morning at the hotel to take us to Semuc Champey. Entertaining kilometers await us on a track that goes deep into the jungle with a really spectacular route. In the last kilometers by pick-up we see the Cahabón river that crosses the thick jungle.

We head for the entrance and in front of it we find different local food stalls. Inside the enclosure there are no food stalls or bars.
