Visiting Semuc Champey on your own

One of the best reasons to go to the center of Guatemala is to visit Semuc Champey. It is one of those destinations that, despite its apparent popularity, has retained its untamed beauty, probably because of its remote location.

This wonder was discovered relatively recently, and it was not until 1950 when, in an action to rescue a fisherman who had suffered an accident, they came face to face with this brutal place.

The rescuers did not hesitate to inform the media and local tourism, who were amazed by the unexpected jewel they had hidden so close. In 2005 it was declared a Natural Monument, and I don’t think so.

What is Semuc Champey and where is it located?

This beautiful corner of Guatemala is actually a Natural Park and is a very nice excursion from Lanquin.

Semuc Champey means “where the river hides under the stones” in the local Mayan language, and refers to the 350-meter natural bridge in limestone under which the Cahabón River passes subway, forming a spectacular set of watery aquamarine pools located in the Sierra de Chamá a few kilometers from Lanquín, in the heart of Guatemala.

To visit Semuc Champey we decided to stay in the aforementioned Lanquín, a small town with a very rural atmosphere, but with some tourist infrastructure. It is in my opinion the best possible base camp to explore this area. The more urbanites, however, opt for Cobán, a full-fledged city, but with less charm and somewhat more remote.

How to get to Semuc Champey

The previous stage of our trip through Guatemala took place at the impressive Lake Atitlán. Getting from here to the Semuc Champey area takes a full day transfer (it takes about 12 hours from Panajachel). At first glance, one may wonder if it is worth the effort and time. I tell you it is, it’s a picture that stays etched in your retina forever.
